Startups are increasing building their software applications on Open Source or low-cost software infrastructure. LAMP. as it is known, for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP/Python/Perl, is especially becoming a platform of choice for many young companies. Does this trend reflect something interesting about the infrastructure needs of startup ventures? Why is Open Source so attractive to entrepreneurs? Does LAMP provide a better base for entrepreneurs to innovate on top of? Or is it all purely about cost?
Deborah Magid, Director of Software Strategy in IBM's Venture Capital Group, will make a brief presentation of research into trends in Open Source investment and adoption, and the use of LAMP by developers. Then, we will engage in an informal discussion on how these trends might play out.
What are the greatest forms of leverage of LAMP platforms / open source? Come with your favorite theories and test them out on your peers!
