Wireless Sensor Networks
——————————————

In the history of computing - mainframe, minicomputer, workstation, personal computer, PDA, and cellphone — the largest business and societal impacts came from new computer classes that were typically smaller and less expensive than earlier computers, especially when previously standalone devices become networked. What's next?

Obvious computers, like those above, are vastly outnumbered by embedded computers that control many products, such as automobiles, microwave ovens, cameras, thermostats, hotel door locks, building monitors, factory floor devices and health monitoring systems. Beyond today's embedded technology, next generation micro sensors incorporating wireless technology will be able to cost-effectively connect large numbers of tiny, inexpensive devices (sometimes called "smart dust").

This technology will enable new kinds of pervasive computing and smart environments, such as highly integrated physical security systems, next-generation battlefield command systems, continuous health monitoring and assisted living for geriatric care. While the core sensor technology is beginning to receive notice (see recent articles in the SJ Mercury or Fortune, which labeled the technology #1 in "Ten tech trends to bet on") this still represents a very early market opportunity. Much work remains at the infrastructure level and next generation applications are still largely in the design phase. Please join us for an engaging evening discussing the technology underlying the next wave of pervasive computing.
