Text Analytics: The Next Frontier in Business Intelligence ————————————————————————————
There's Far More to Text than Google

Business Intelligence has traditionally relied on structured, database-organized information to generate insight about customers, markets and business trends. A new generation of text analysis tools enables organizations to mine the 85% of information stored outside of traditional databases in such forms as email, websites, weblogs and documents for emerging trends. This information provides key context that statistically organized information often fails to capture, and a new generation of companies and technologies have developed approaches to the analysis of text well beyond traditional search and retrieval.
Using textual information we are now able to:
- perform real time competitive analysis in context,
- perform real time assessment of consumer sentiment without formal survey methods,
- better forecast financial risk based on behavioral cues,
- identify critical defects early in a product's life cycle via email communications regarding products,
- and spot new patterns of consumer behavior based on the aggregate analysis of weblogs and user forums.
The June ETF meeting will focus on this emerging market. Apax Partners' Ron Weissman, who has been involved in information retrieval for over twenty years, will chair the session. In addition to two early stage companies focusing on text analytics, Forrester Research will provide an overview of this emerging market and In-Q-Tel, will outline their work as active investors in this arena.
