Opportunities, Nuances and Challenges of VC Investments in China ———————————————————————————————
Registration
VC Task Force and Hua Yuan VC Chapter jointly sponsor Jing Huang, Managing Director, Softbank Asia Infrastructure Fund: "Opportunities, Nuances, and Challenges of VC Investments in China"
Interviewer: David Ai, Vice President Hitachi Corporate Venture (CVC Division)
Come hear it from the source - why Business Week says "VC's Turn An Eagle Eye On China" (see June 14, 2004 issue) these days, and why top-tier VC's like John Doerr (Kleiner Perkins), Dick Kramlich (NEA), and Don Valentine (Sequoia) all decided to tour China's VC scene last month.
Jing Huang is one reason why VC investments in China are getting attention. He has almost 20 years of experience in the VC and hi-tech industries. As a VC investor, at Intel Capital, he led the investment in UTStarcom and, later at Softbank, and he was the sole VC investor in the last round of financing of Shanda, China's largest online game provider, which successfully went public on NASDAQ in 2004 (Nasdaq: SNDA). Zero2IPO, a market research firm in China, named Shanda "The VC Deal of 2003" and Mr. Huang "One of Top Ten Foreign VCs". Mr. Huang also co-founded General Wireless Communication (now MTone; IPO registration in progress).
Based in Beijing, he is the Managing Director in charge of Softbank Asia Infrastructure Fund's China operation (SAIF is a $400M fund, invested by Cisco). Mr. Huang has an MBA from Harvard, and was a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University.
